MEET THE EXTRACTION TEAM-

A 22 DOG ALASKAN MALAMUTE TEAM -
The Alaskan Malamute is the only dog that can successfully excel at travel in the arctic. All of Joe Henderson Malamutes are chosen for this working feature alone. Most of the strains of  Malamutes on the Extraction Team are from the M'Loot line of working Malamutes and are breed to freight haul. Things like endurance, strength, food consumption, proper paws, thick coats, colors of coats and temperaments are all features that are considered when choosing Malamutes for Joe's Expeditions.

"When both an animal and a person recognize that their survival depends on each other there is no longer a dominate role of either person or animal. They work and live together as one unit. Emotions are felt between them like they are one being. When one suffers or feels joy so does the other."  --Joe Henderson

MEET JUNIOR
Six year old Junior is a block of pure muscle! His strength is incredible! He's the perfect build that Joe likes to see in a freighter. And he's very passionate about pulling and extremely affectionate. He just loves all people.

Favorite past time: Chasing Ptarmigan.

Picture
MEET BIG BEN
6 yr old Ben is a a calm dog in nature and the largest dog in the team weighing in at 140 lbs. He's a large brute, but he has a heart of gold. He runs wheel dog on the team, meaning he is the closest dog to the sled and one of the strongest. If there is a stuck sled, he is the first to try to pull to get it moving again and is motivation for the rest of the team. He is one of two rescue dogs on the team. Ben is one of the most intelligent dogs Joe has ever had the privilege to have. He gets along with everyone, and is like a big brother figure that just stands by to lend a hand to those who need it.
Favorite past time: Sleeping and ignoring other dogs

Picture
MEET TAHKIN
Tahkin is two years old. His name means Snowy River in Alaskan Tlingit language. He's named after one of Joe's first malamutes. He's very intelligent and mild mannered. He loves to pull especially when the going gets tough! Someday, Joe hopes he will be a lead dog.
Favorite past time: Patiently waiting to work

Picture
 MEET RED
Red, eight years old, is a very driven individual. If he was human he would be the football player who lowers his head and plows ahead regardless of whom or what is in his way.
Favorite past time: Tummy Rubs

Picture
MEET KANUTI
Kanuti, a two year old rookie, is named after a dog Joe had many years ago. It means "Old Man River" in Athabaskan Indian language. But he's not old and neither acts old. He's very energetic and pulls with incredible strength and passion.

Favorite past time: Playing chase.

Picture
MEET KELSAW
Kelsaw is another two year old rookie. He has wonderfully integrated into the team like a veteran. He's an interesting fella; while harnessed he has an uncontrollable amount of enthusiasm. He's like a firecracker. Yet while camped and the harnesses are put away he's the calmest individual I've ever seen. He has a unique point like mask.

Favorite past time: Giving 'the Look'

Picture
MEET JOHANNA
Johanna is a three old rookie and was a shy individual until this expedition. Now, he's a very outgoing, intelligent and affectionate guy. And he's very well behaved. If Johanna were human, he'd be the straight A++ student in the classroom.

Favorite past time: Chewing harnesses when he's not learning

Picture
MEET CHAMP
Champ is eight years old and originates from an "old-time" Alaskan husky/ malamute bloodline which Joe has maintained for 30 years. He has the same build and look as the old Alaskan huskies from long ago. Nowadays though, Alaskan huskies do not resemble Champ whatsoever. Champ is very smart and loves to play…maybe a little too much at times. But he makes up for it. He's a stout worker and takes his job seriously.
Favorite past time: Playing

Picture
MEET PETRA - AKA 'THE WHITE DEVIL'
Petra means "rock" in Greek. And eight year old Petra certainly has lived up to her namesake in regards to being a rock solid puller. Her drive is unmatched. Although, she tends to also have penchant for getting into scuffles and "rock" could also be short for Rocky Balboa. Joe always has his eye on her to make sure she isn't eyeing up someone twice her size. Joe states she's a handful but has her place in the team. He always jokes, if there was a bear altercation, he'd just release 'The White Devil!'
Favorite past time: Bleeding and 'socializing' with other dogs.

Picture
 MEET DINO
Dino is eight years old and is a solid worker. He's also an affectionate guy who loves lots of attention. His experience in working and living in the arctic environment is vital for the rookies to learn from. If he were human he'd be the uncle who watches out for his nieces and nephews while tutoring them on life.
Favorite past time: Teaching

Picture
 MEET SMOKEY
Four year old Smokey, like his half-brother Junior, he's built with solid muscle. His large paws and broad chest is ideal for breaking trail. He's quite affectionate and loves to play. If he was human, he'd be the school's top athlete who everyone adores and tries to mimic.
Favorite past time: Stealing mittens, then pleads the fifth.

Picture
 MEET BEAR - AKA 'GRABBER'
Bear is seven years old and is another "old-time" Alaskan husky. He's a staunch puller and can run in every position except lead. He's a little smaller than the others and hasn't the brute strength as the pure breed Alaskan malamutes. But he has a big, big passionate heart.
Favorite past time: Grabbing any human he can get his paws around and never letting go

Picture
MEET TIP
Tip is nine years old and was named for his fiery red tinge on the tips of his ears. He's a very loyal dog. And similarly to most malamutes, he loves to pull heavy loads and break trail. Joe has always found it interesting how purebreed Alaskan malamutes prefer hard work like breaking trail and hauling frieight rather than running on groomed trails and pulling a light sled.

Favorite past time: Trail breaking

Picture
 MEET PENNY
Penny is five years old and is a sweetheart of a dog. She pulls with a fiery heart of desire. While in harness Penny is all business and no play. If she were human she'd be the top executive. But when the day is finished she loves to romp and play with her teammates.
Favorite past time: Looking pretty

Picture
MEET TEE KAY
Four year old Tee Kay is an amazingly strong puller. Someday, Joe hopes she will be a great leader. But in the meantime, she needs to mature from her adolescence. Someimes she loves to play while running. Typically, Alaskan malamutes require 4-5 years to mature both mentally and physically.

Favorite past time: Getting into trouble.

Picture
 MEET ALEX (lemming gulper)
Two year old rookie Alex is a spitfire of energy! Alex is quite an enjoyable guy to be around. He's always happy, as most malamutes are, but his personality is harmoniously balanced between high energy and a serious worker. He knows that there is a time to play and a time to work.
Favorite past time: Gulping down lemmings while running down the trail, never missing a beat.

Picture
 MEET LADY
Lady is a whirlwind of characters and personality. Very unpredictable but she knows what she wants; and that is to pull. She prefers to be left alone and likes plenty of "elbow room" to perform her task. Yet, she's a real gentle gal underneath her rambunctious demeanor.
Favorite past time: Dreaming about solo trips.

Picture
MEET ANGEL - AKA 'SQUEAKY'
Angel is a young two year old rookie with a happy go lucky demeanor and energetic gal. She is timid but very loving and affectionate. She's also a crafty escape artist who knows how to slip out of her harness after stopping for the day to camp.
Favorite past time: Researching Houdini
